Im Juli 1871 kam es in der Grube zu einer folgenschweren Gasexplosion. Zwei Arbeiter versuchten mit einem Gebläse, Grubengase auszutreiben. Dabei arbeiteten sie mit offener Flamme, was die Explosion verursachte. Daraufhin und angesichts des in Brand geratenden Grubenholzes verließen die übrigen Bergleute fluchtartig die Grube, und bei dieser Stampede wurden einige Kumpel fast zu Tode getrampelt.
