Er war ein freigelassener Sklave ("Blackman"). Er heiratete eine Mulattin und hatte mit ihr acht oder mehr Kinder, darunter auch Samuel (1813-1894). Samuel und sein Bruder Thomas gingen ins Schlepper-Geschäft. Die Schuyler's Tow Boat Line wurde 1852 gegründet. In diesem Jahr wurde auch ihr Flaggschiff, die "America" gebaut. | | Specials: | Ausgestellt und original unterschrieben von Samuel Schuyler als Treasurer, Thomas W. Olcott als Secretary und W. Irving Babcock (1858-1917) als Vice President. Olcott war ein promenenter Banker in Albany, W.I. Babcock war einer der bedeutendsten Konstrukteure und erfinder im amerikanischen Schiffbau, 1889 wurde er Chef der Chicago Shipbuilding Co.
