Der Uhrmacher Ottmar Mergenthaler (geb. 1854 in Bachtel/Württ., gest. 1899 in Baltimore) wanderte 1872 in die USA aus und erfand 1884 die “Linotype”, die erste Setzmaschine zum Gießen ganzer Schriftzeilen. Bis dahin mussten Texte mühsam von Hand gesetzt werden, so dass diese Erfindung den Buchdruck vollkommen revolutionierte. Bis Ende der 20er Jahre waren ca. 40.000 dieser Maschinen in den USA und ca. 15.000 im Rest der Welt im Einsatz. 1909 wurde in Deutschland auch die Mehrheit an der Mergenthaler Setzmaschinenfabrik GmbH erworben. | | Specials: | Dekorativer Stahlstich, schöne Abb. einer Linotype.
