Seney die treibende Kraft hinter der Gründung der New York, Chicago & St. Louis Railroad, der berühmten „Nickel Plate Road“. Bereits ein Jahr später konnte diese Bahn mit gutem Gewinn an die Lake Shore & Michigan verkauft werden, die damit einen gefährlichen neuen Wettbewerber ausschalten konnte. In der Panik von 1884 musste die Bank ebenfalls für kurze Zeit schließen, überlebte die Krise aber, anders als 13 andere Banken in New York.
