Die Patentierung eines Gewehrs für die Brüder Henry und Lewis Hammond führte 1863 zur Gründung dieser Firma. Das erfolgreichste Modell wurde 1865 die Bulldog-Pistole (die noch heute als Sammlerstück Spitzenpreise bringt). Auf große Geschäfte im Sezessionskrieg hoffend überschätzte der spätere Firmenchef Thomas J. Vail seine Möglichkeiten.
