Er war der erste Nationalpark der Welt. - aber natürlich nicht weltfremd. Moderne Entwicklungen wie Eisenbahnen oder das Telephon hielten auch in diesem damals entlegenen Winkel Einzug. An der Wende zum 20. Jh. war das Telefongeschäft noch unwahrscheinlich stark fragmentiert, praktisch jedes Dorf im Westen der USA hatte damals erst einmal seine eigene Telefongesellschaft. Die Yellowstone-Park-Telefongesellschaft wurde Ende 1899 von drei Geschäftsleuten aus Bozeman, Mont. gegründet, ein Startkapital von 10.000 $ reichte dabei aus.
