Er hatte 1899 an der Strecke der Illinois Central die nach ihm benannte Stadt Wheatcroft gegründet, von wo die 10 Meilen lange Strecke nach Providence an der Strecke der Louisville & Nashville führte. Die Bahn bediente über ein Dutzend Kohlebergwerke entlang ihrer Strecke mit Werksanschlüssen und ermöglichte ihnen so den Abtransport über die großen Netze der I.C.RR. und der L.&N.RR.
