Bis dahin unterbrach der Delaware River die Route 73 zwischen Tacony (einem Stadtteil von Philadelphia) und dem auf der anderen Seite des Flusses in New Jersey gelegenen Palmyra. Der Fährverbindung von Tacony nach Palmyra war aber nur ein äußerst kurzes Leben beschieden: Bereits 1927 begann der Bau der „Tacony-Palmyra Bridge“.
