Nachfolger der Rocky Mountain Telephone Co., entstanden 1881 mit weniger als 100 Vertragsanschlüssen. Mit finanzieller Hilfe der Bell-Gesellschaft kaufte diese Ges. praktisch alle Konkurrenten im Nordwesten der USA auf und bald umfasste ihr Tätigkeitsgebiet die Staaten Utah, Montana, Idaho und Wyoming. 1911 mit Colorado Telephone und Tri-State Telephone fusioniert zur „Mountain States Telegraph & Telephone Co.“ Bis zur Aufspaltung 1984 war A.T.&T. mit über 88 % beteiligt, und die Mountain States verteidigte ihr Quasi-Monopol bis in die 1990er Jahre.
