place: | New York | | Picture: |  | | Info: | Keimzelle ist die 1849 gegründete „Pacific Railroad“, die 1868 vom Staat Missouri für einige Monate beschlagnahmt war und nach Konkursversteigerung 1876 zur „Missouri Pacific Railway“ wurde. Sie erlebte dann viele weitere Reorganisationen, fiel dem räuberischen Eisenbahn-Baron Jay Gould in die Hände, saugte nicht weniger als 147 andere Bahngesellschaften auf. Die letzte Reorganisation fand 1909 statt, hielt aber auch nur ein paar Jahre: Aus der Konkursversteigerung 1917 heraus bildete sich dann die heutige Missouri Pacific Railroad mit einem gewaltigen Streckennetz von 6.257 Meilen. Davon stammten 3.267 Meilen von der alten „Missouri Pacific“ und 2.990 Meilen von der bei dieser Gelegenheit aufgesogenen „St. Louis, Iron Mountain & Southern Ry.“. Tatsächlich war es am Ende so, daß von ihrem zuletzt 6.455 Meilen umfassenden Streckennetz zwischen St. Louis, Omaha und Pueblo nur ganze 4 Meilen von der Missouri Pacific selbst gebaut worden waren, den Rest hatte man durch Fusionen (6.257 Meilen) und Kauf von Bahnstrecken (194 Meilen) erworben. Die 1923 gegründete Holding „Missouri Pacific Corporation“ stieg später in weitere Geschäftsfelder ein (u.a. das Öl- und Pipeline-Geschäft), die Eisenbahnsparte ging 1983 an die Union Pacific. | | Specials: | Maschinenschriftliche Ausfertigung.
