Oliver Ames II. (1831-1895) war Sohn von Oakes Ames (1804-1873). Die beiden Brüder Oakes und Oliver Ames waren neben Sidney Dillon und Thomas C. Durant die Hauptpromotoren der Union Pacific, des östlichen Teils der großen Transkontinentalen Eisenbahn. Nach dem Credit Mobilier-Skandal (in dem Oakes Ames als Sündenbock zu Fall gebracht wurde, während Sidney Dillon und Thomas C. Durant ungeschoren davon kamen) baute Oliver Ames das Familienunternehmen Oliver Ames & Sons, das von seinem Vater gegründet wurde, wieder auf. Oliver Ames II., Mitinhaber der Firma Oliver Ames & Sons, erwarb ein Riesenvermögen mit langfristigen Investitionen, bekleidete leitende Positionen in zahlreichen Banken, Eisenbahn- und Grundstücksgesellschaften. 1886-90 war er Gouverneur von Massachusetts.
