Sein Großvater gleichen Namens hatte 1863 die Hof-Pianoforte-Fabrik Thein in Bremen und Hamburg gegründet. Thein-Pianos waren für höchste Klangqualität und luxuriöse Verarbeitung bekannt. Nebenbei bemerkt: Auch das der Legende nach bis zum letzten Moment vor dem Untergang an Deck der Titanic gespielte Piano war ein Thein-Piano. Schon 1924 ging die AG wieder in Liquidation.
