place: | Portland, Maine | | Picture: |  | | Number: | 103 | | Info: | Gegründet 1847 als Buckfield Branch RR, um die Kleinstadt Buckfield bei Mechanic Falls an die Atlantic & St. Lawrence RR anzubinden. Da die A.&S.L.RR. in 1676-mm-Breitspur gebaut war, wählte man diese Spurweite auch für die 21 km lange Anschlußbahn. Nach ihrem Konkurs 1856/57 wurde die erst halbfertige Buckfield Branch RR unter obigem Namen reorganisiert. Die P.&O.C.RR. vollendete die Strecke zwar, doch der Betrieb blieb defizitär und auch die neue Ges. ging 1873 pleite. Da die Anschlußstrecke Portland-Montreal 1874 auf Normalspur umgebaut wurde, mußte das auch für diese Anschlußbahn gemacht werden, was die Wiedereröffnung durch die neue Rumford Falls & Buckfield RR bis 1879 verzögerte. 1890 pachtete die wiederum neu gegründete Portland & Rumford Falls Ry. die noch immer defizitäre Bahn und verlängerte sie bis 1894 nach Süden um 19 km bis Rumford Jct. und nach Norden um 24 km bis Rumford Falls. 1897 entstand noch eine 18 km lange Verbindungsstrecke Canton-Livermore Falls zwecks Anschluß an die Maine Central RR. Im Zuge einer erneuten Reorganisation wurde die Strecke 1907 für 1000 Jahre an die neue Portland & Rumford Falls RR verpachtet. Die Teilstrecke Livermore Falls-Rumford wird bis heute von der Pan Am Railways betrieben, der Abschnitt Rumford-Canton wurde bereits in den 1950er Jahren stillgelegt. | | Specials: | Große Holzstich-Vignette mit Personenzug, teilweise überdeckt von einem grünen Prägesiegel. | | Availability: | Unentwertet.
