Info:Der 1827 eröffnete Ohio-Erie-Kanal im Bundesstaat Ohio verband Akron mit dem Cuyahoga River nahe dessen Mündung in den Eriesee in Cleveland. Wenige Jahre später wurde er bis zum Ohio River bei Portsmouth, O. verlängert. Damit bot der 496 km lange Kanal eine durchgehende Verbindung vom Golf von Mexico über den Mississippi und den Ohio River bis zum Eriesee. Seine immense Bedeutung für Inlandstransporte büßte er durch den Bau von Eisenbahnen bald ein. Seit 1862 diente er fast nur noch als Wasserreservoir. Nach einem vernichtenden Hochwasser wurden 1913 große Teile des Kanals aufgegeben. Die erhalten gebliebenen Teile im „Ohio and Erie Canal Historic District“ und im Cuyahoga Valley National Park stehen heute unter Denkmalschutz. Vor allem die alten Treidelpfade entlang des Kanals sind heute bei Radfahrern und Wanderern beliebt.
Specials:Herrlicher Kupferstich mit vier Vignetten: Zwei antike Kriegerköpfe mit drachenbewehrtem Helm, Ochsengespann fährt ein riesiges Fuder Getreide, Reiter mit Treidelpferden am Kanal, im Hintergrund eine riesige Mühle und zwei Eisenbahnzüge.
