Eine Gruppe von Pilgrims und Puritaner zog 1628 und 1629 in die Neue Welt und gründeten Salem. Die “Great Migration” begann 1630. Boston wurde 1632 Hauptstadt der bis 1691 streng theokratisch regierten Massachusetts Bay Colony. Im 18. Jh. durch Handel aufblühend empfand das Land die merkantilistische Politik Englands besonders drückend und wurde zum Vorkämper der Unabhängigkeitsbewegung (Boston Tea Party 1773, Revolutionsregierung 1774). 1780, wahrend der Revolution, 9 Jahre bevor die amerikanische Verfassung ratifiziert wurde, nahm Massachusetts die liberale, republikanische Verfassung an. | | Specials: | Mehrere Originalsignaturen, u.a.
