place: | Augsburg | | Picture: |  | | Info: | Ursprünglich betrieb der Kaufmann J. Fr. Merz in Nürnberg eine Schafwollgroßhandlung, aus der eine Kammgarnspinnerei mit Pferdebetrieb hervorging. Wegen der viel günstigeren Wasserkraft ging Merz 1836 nach Augsburg und errichtete hier an der Schäfflerbachstraße die mit 3.000 Spindeln damals größte Kammgarn-Spinnerei im Gebiet des Deutschen Zollvereins. 1845 Umwandlung in eine AG. 1925 Übernahme der Werdener Feintuchwerke AG in Essen-Werden (1963 wieder abgestoßen). Die größte deutsche Kammgarnspinnerei kämpfte sehr lange, wurde aber Ende 2001 dann doch eines der letzten Opfer der Krise der deutschen Textilindustrie. | | Availability: | Ungültig-perforiert.
