Hinkley war eine eindrucksvolle Persönlichkeit: Zunächst Herausgeber der Lokalzeitung in Poughkeepsie, dann gründete er mit dem Daily Graphic in New York City die erste bebilderte Tageszeitung der Welt (wo er schon seit 1883 auch Frauen beschäftigte), danach baute er eine Elektrofirma auf, die Motoren und Generatoren herstellte und später von Westinghouse gekauft wurde.
