Diese hatte über die Richmond & West Point Terminal Ry. and Warehouse Co. schon ein ziemlich weitgespanntes Netz besessen und legte 1894 mitsamt fast allen Töchtern eine der spektakulärsten Pleiten hin. Die Southern Ry. machte in der Folge durch Aufkäufe anderer Eisenbahnen gewaltig Tempo: Keine 30 Jahre nach ihrer Gründung verfügte sie mit 7.000 Meilen Gleislänge über das mächtigste Eisenbahn-System im Südosten der USA.
