Fish, president der Bank und von ihr finanziert, sowie unverantwortliche Kreditgewährungen an die Brokerfirma Grant & Ward, bei der James D. Fish ebenfalls Teilhaber war, führten die Bank 1884 in die Insolvenz. Hinterher stellte sich heraus, daß allein die (weitgehend unbesicherten) Kredite an Grant & Ward mehr als das sechsfache des Eigenkapitals der Bank ausmachten.
