Drake die erste kommerzielle Erdölbohrung der Geschichte, nach einer noch früheren Bohrung in Baku am Kaspischen Meer, niedergebracht. Drake begründete damit den Ruf der Stadt als Geburtsort des Erdölzeitalters. Titusville wuchs Anfang der 1870 Jahre rasant durch die Entdeckung der Petroleumvorkommen dort. Viele Ingenieure und Ölarbeiter siedelten sich an. Es wurde gebaut: Kirchen, öffentliche Schulen, First-Class Hotels und sogar eine Oper wurden errichtet. Ein Wasserwerk, die Eisenbahn "Union and Titusville Ry" entstanden, Zeitungsverlage wurden gegründet, ein lokales Gesundheitswesen versorgte die Bevölkerung. Auch Banken entstanden, die Second National Bank of Titusville (Kapital 200.000 $, President Charles Hyde), die Producers and Manufacturers Bank (Kapital 100.000 $, President D. H. Mitchell), die Titusville Savings Bank (President F. W. Ames) und die Citizens Bank (Kapital 100.000 $, President W.H.
