Louis Hackethal, der eine überaus wetter- und säurebeständige Isolation für elektrische Leitungen entwickelt hatte. 1907 Umwandlung in eine AG. Großaktionär war zuletzt die Gutehoffnungshütte (Haniel-Gruppe). 1966 Fusion mit der ebenfalls zu GHH gehörenden Osnabrücker Kupfer- und Drahtwerk zur “Kabel- und Metallwerke Gutehoffnungshütte AG”. Die Elektroaktivitäten wurden 1981 in die kabelmetal electro GmbH ausgegliedert. Diese Gesellschaft wurde 1982 an Les Cables de Lyon verkauft. Nach der 1992 erfolgten Übernahme von Kabel Rheydt wurde die Alcatel als Holding für kabelmetall electro und Kabel Rheydt sowie deren Beteiligungsgesellschaften gegründet.
