Die ursprüngliche Bahn war die 1869 als Springfield, Effingham & Quincy Ry gegründete Schmalspur-Bahn. Fertiggestellt 1885, kurze Zeit in Verbindung mit der Bloomfield RR of Indiana operierend, aber 1886 als Indiana & Illinois Southern RR reorganisiert, 1887 umgestellt auf Normalspur. In Konkurs gegangen und 1890 als St. Louis, Indianapolis & Eastern RR neu gegründet. 1899 an die Illinois Central RR für 1.000.000 $ verkauft.
