SPD-Ministerpräsident in Braunschweig war in den 1920er Jahren Otto Grotewohl, der spätere Staatspräsident der DDR. 1931 kamen die Nationalsozialisten in eine Koalitionsregierung. Ihr Minister Klagges ernannte 1932 Adolf Hitler zum Braunschweigischen Regierungsrat, der die Stelle zwar nie antrat, aber als deutscher Beamter damit das passive Wahlrecht in Deutschland besaß, das ihm als österreichischem Staatsbürger zuvor verwehrt war.
