Die Stadt Tharandt, 14 km südwestlich von Dresden (an der Linie Dresden-Reichenbach der Sächsischen Staatsbahnen) beherbergte die von Heinrich Cotta gegründete älteste Forstakademie Deutschlands. Der Bergbau dieser Gegend war nicht sehr ergiebig.
