Haupterzeugnisse waren Streich- spritz-, tauch- und walzfähige Farben und Lacke für alle Zwecke, die unter den Markennamen Glasurit, Glasso, Glassomax, Glassofix, Glassodur, Glassit, Glassohyd, Glassival, Glassocryl und Glassophor in den Handel für das In- und Ausland kamen. Nachdem das Unternehmen ursprünglich als Handelsgeschäft für Lacke und Farben betrieben worden war, erfolgte 1893 die Aufnahme der Eigenfabrikation. 1903 Gründung eines Zweigwerkes in Hiltrup i.W., das später zum Hauptwerk aufstieg. Die Zerstörungen während des Krieges nahm man hinterher zum Anlass, die Produktionsanlagen in Hiltrup auf modernsten Stand neu aufzubauen und auch ein Forschungslabor einzurichten. Nach dem Krieg stieg Glasurit nicht nur zum Hauptlieferanten für die deutsche Automobilindustrie auf, sondern auch zum größten Lackhersteller der Welt. 1965 entschlossen sich die Nachfahren von Max Winkelmann, das Unternehmen an die BASF zu verkaufen.
