Sie kontrollierte den Zucker-Handel auf Kuba über viele Jahrzehnte. Nach der Machtübernahme durch Fidel Castro und der Kommunistischen Partei Kubas wurden die Besitztümer der Familie enteignet. Alfonso Gomez-Mena war ein Mitglied der Familie. In den 1950er-Jahren war er einer der bekanntesten kubanischen Rennfahrer, 1950 hatte er u.a. ein Straßenrennen in Havanna gewonnen.
