Bald darauf öffneten je drei weitere Häuser im Rheinland und in Ostpreußen. 1953 Erwerb der von den Gebrüdern Schocken 1901 gegründeten Merkur AG mit 11 Häusern in Süddeutschland. 1954 Erwerb der Emil Köster AG mit 10 Defaka-Niederlassungen. 1968 Umwandlung in eine AG. Mehrheitsaktionär war lange der Tabakriese B.A.T. Industries PLC in London, Minderheitsanteile hielten auch die Deutsche Bank und die Commerzbank. 1996 erwarb die METRO über 95 % des Horten-Kapitals.
