Erst mit dem Verkauf an die Argonaut Mining Co. 1893 wurde das Vorkommen ernsthaft erschlossen mit einem 63 Grad vertikalen Schacht von zuletzt 1.700 m Länge. 1922 ereignete sich in dem Bergwerk das schwerste Grubenunglück, das in Kalifornien je eine Goldmine ereilt hatte: 1.400 m unter der Erde starben 47 Bergleute bei einem Grubenfeuer. Bis zur Schließung 1942 produzierte die Mine mehr als 1 Mio.
