Es ist das größte und bedeutendste Sprechtheater Norwegens. Mit seinen Klassikerinszenierungen - vor allem Stücke von Henrik Ibsen - hat es sich einen internationalen Bekanntheitsgrad erworben. Besonders in den sechziger und siebziger Jahren und seit etwa 1990 hat das Nationaltheater auch systematisch die Gegenwartsdramatik gefördert. Das Theatergebäude steht seit 1983 unter Denkmalschutz.
