Die Gesellschaft ging aus dem "Zuckersyndikat für Deutsch-Ostafrika" hervor und hatte das alleinige Recht im Tal des Pangani Zucker und Rum zu fabrizieren. Bereits die Araber nutzten das Panganiland im späteren Deutsch-Ostafrika mit der Hauptstadt Pangani an der Mündung des gleichnamigen Flusses in den Ozean. Bis etwa 35 km landeinwärts ließen sie Zuckerrohrfelder durch ihre Sklaven bebauen. Pangani war auch Ausgangspunkt der Handelskarawanen nach dem Kilimandscharo und weiter.
