Um 1826 kam dann die Gasbeleuchtung auf. 1886 erfand der österreichische Chemiker und Ingenieur Auer von Welsbach das Gasglühlicht. 1901 präsentierte die Auergesellschaft Glühlampen mit Osmium-Glühfäden. Schon 1880 hatte Siemens & Halske die Entwicklung einer Glühlampe mit Kohlefäden erfolgreich abgeschlossen und 1882 die älteste deutsche Glühlampenfabrik eröffnet. Das Warenzeichen OSRAM wurde ursprünglich 1906 von der Auergesellschaft angemeldet. Es ist ein Kunstwort aus den früher gängigen Glühwendel-Materialien OSmium und WolfRAM. Am 1.7.1919 legten Siemens & Halske, die AEG und die Auergesellschaft ihre Glühlampenproduktion in der neu gegründeten OSRAM GmbH KG zusammen. Seit 1978 ist Siemens Alleingesellschafter, Firmensitz ist München. Heute erwirtschaftet OSRAM mit 43.500 Mitarbeitern in 46 Werken (verteilt auf 17 Länder der Erde) einen Jahresumsatz von 4,6 Mrd.
