Bis 1891 wurden auf der Festlandseite bis Baltimore zwei Konkurrenzbahnen mitbenutzt, am 5.10.1891 ging auf der 44 Meilen langen Distanz zwischen der Endstation Claiborne an der Chesapeake Bay und Baltimore eine direkte Dampferverbindung in Betrieb.
