Bereits ab 1671 wurde der Fluss Witham für die Binnenschifffahrt ausgebaut. Die Länge des Kanals betrug 36 Meilen, von Lincoln bis zum Fossdyke Kanal. Auf Grund der strategischen Lage an einer Stelle, wo zwei große Handelsstraßen zusammenlaufen, zu erreichen auch über Wasser, entwickelte sich Lincoln zu einem bedeutenden Handelszentrum. Vom Mittelalter an verdiente Lincoln lange durch den Woll- und Tuchhandel und wurde zu einer wohlhabenden Stadt.
