Auch in der Schifffahrt fing nun das Zeitalter der Dampfmaschinen an. Nachdem bereits in den 1830er Jahren die Dampfschifffahrt auf den Donau aufgenommen wurde, gründeten 1843 die deutschen Handelsherren in der kroatischen Hafenstadt Sissek eine Schleppdampfschifffahrtsgesellschaft.
