Philadelphia war anfangs der Nukleus des US-Versicherungsgewerbes: 1752 gründete Benjamin Franklin hier die erste Feuerversicherung, und 1759 entstand mit der „Corporation for Relief of Poor and Distressed Widows and Children of Presbyterian Ministers“ die erste und älteste Lebensversicherung. Die 1850 gegründete „American Life Insurance Company“ war mit einer außergewöhnlichen Geschäftsidee erfolgreich: Zweck Beförderung eines gemäßigten Lebensstils bot sie totalen Abstinenzlern erhebliche Rabatte auf die Lebensversicherungsprämien.
