Einerseits diente die Insel als Umschlagplatz für den Sklavenhandel zwischen Afrika, Portugal, Brasilien und den karibischen Inseln, andererseits siedelte Portugal von der Inquisition ausgewiesene portugiesische Juden und Strafgefangene an. Anfang des 20. Jh. waren die Inseln Sao Tomé und Principe der größte Kakaoproduzent der Welt.
