Neben dem Rohstoffvorkommen spielte bei der Standortwahl die Wasserkraft des Neckars bei Lauffen eine entscheidende Rolle. Ein herausragendes Ereignis war 1891 die erste Übertragung von Drehstrom aus dem Wasserkraftwerk des Zementwerks nach Frankfurt durch Oskar von Miller. Als Folge dieser Pioniertat wurde ab 1892 Heilbronn als erste Stadt der Welt mit elektrischem Drehstrom versorgt.
