Youle, vormals Minister der brasilianischen Regierung, der seine Beziehungen ausspielen sollte. Erst im Jahre 1873, nach langen Verhandlungen, erklärte sich der brasilianische Staat, der Gesellschaft langfristige Garantien auf das eingesetzte Kapital zu geben (7 % auf ein Kapital von 2.650.000 £ für die Dauer von 30 Jahren). 1900 wurden die Gleise über Serra da Mantiqueira, dem Bergzug zwischen Rio de Janeiro und Sao Paulo, verlegt.
