Die Bahn führte von der Westgrenze des Staates, von den Banks of Rio Quarai nach Vila de Itaqui, von wo aus sie später (1913) weitergeführt wurde nach Sao Borja. Die Bahn war eher aus strategischen Gründen errichtet als aus ökonomischen, sie folgte der Grenze zu Argentinien. Die Arbeit begann am 1.11.1883 auf der brasilianischen Seite am Rio Quarai, an der Grenze zu Uruguai, den Banks des Rio Uruguais folgend bis zur Grenze mit Argentinien. Diese 183,5 km lange Strecke führte durch Guterres, Itapitocai, Uruguaiana, Touro Passo, Ibicul und erreichte Itaqui. Die BGS wurde 1924 verstaatlicht. 1933 eingegründet in die Viacao Ferrera Jo Rio Grande do Sul (VFRGS), kontrolliert durch die Regierung.
