Fulton erbaute Raddampfschiff Clermont seine erste Fahrt auf dem Hudson an. 1812 fuhr der Dampfer Comet von H. Bell auf dem Clyde. Im Mai 1819 überquerte die Savannah zum ersten Mal unter Dampf (18 Tage) und Segel (8 Tage) den Atlantik. Als erstes eisernes transatlantisches Schraubendampfschiff wurde 1843 die Great Britain erbaut.
