Die ersten Streckenarbeiten begannen 1853 in Royapuram (wichtigste Bahnstation Madras bis 1907). Feierliche Einweihung der ersten Bahnabschnittes durch Gouverneur Lord Harris am 28.6.1856. Lord Harris lobte dabei die niedrigen Baukosten von 5.500 £ pro Meile. Regulärer Bahnbetrieb ab 1.7.1856 auf der Strecke Veyasarpandy - Walajah Road (Arcot), 63 km lang. Eingesetzt wurden zwei Dampflokomotiven von Simpson & Co. Am 3.3.1859 Eröffnung der Strecke Allahabad - Kanpur, 119 Meilen lang.
