Das Gründungskapital betrug 15 Mio. Rbl., ein ausserordentlich hoher Betrag. Die Ölfelder der Firma lagen bei Baku. Baku, von einer dichten, schwarzen, stark riechenden Ölwolke umhüllt, weswegen sie die “Schwarze Stadt” genannt wurde, beherbergte bereits in den 1880er Jahren mehr als 200 Raffinerien. Die Finanzierung der boomenden Ölindustrie übernahm der Pariser Zweig der Rothschilds.
