date: | 01.01.1889 | | Picture: |  | | Number: | 5760 | | Info: | Die Vasco-Navarro-Schmalspurbahn (Spitzname “Crab Cage”) war ursprünglich geplant als direkte Verbindung von Bilbao zur (heutigen baskischen Haupt-)Stadt Vitoria-Gasteiz. Realisiert wurde aber nur die Nord-Süd-Strecke von Vergara nach Vitoria und weiter nach dem navarresischen Estella im Osten. 1930 wurde die Strecke elektrifiziert. Die Bahn wurde 1967 stillgelegt. Das 22 km lange Teilstück Vergara-Vitoria ist heute ein bekannter Rad- und Wanderweg. Bemerkenswert an dieser Strecke ist zum einen die Durchquerung der Schlucht bei Arquijas, zum anderen der anschließend 6 km lang schnurgerade bis Campezo führende Abschnitt. Er diente ab 1941 als Erprobungsstrecke für die sog. Talgo-Züge (besonders leichte Niederflur-Züge in Gliederbauweise, die noch heute erfolgreich auf europäischen Bahnstrecken eingesetzt werden). | | Specials: | Anleihe über 570.000 £, rückzahlbar bis 1943.
