Der Hausberg der Genfer (er liegt auf französischem Territorium) war seit jeher ein beliebtes Ausflugsziel. Die C.d.F. du Salève wurde im französischen Annemasse mit Schweizer Kapital gegründet und als erste elektrische Zahnradbahn der Welt 1893 eröffnet. Die 600-V-Stromzufuhr über eine dritte isolierte Schiene galt als technische Errungenschaft, brachte aber auch einigen Unvorsichtigen den Tod.
