Mont-Saint-Michel wurde auf einer kleinen, 90 m hohen Granitinsel gebaut. Die gleichnamige Bucht weist einen Gezeitenunterschied bis zu 14 m auf, bei Ebbe gibt das Meer bis 15 km Watt frei. Die Insel wurde bereits im 6. Jh. von Mönchen bewohnt.
