Eine Bohrung traf das 6-20 m mächtige Hartsalzlager in 1000 m Teufe an, der Schacht wurde 1906 begonnen und ging 1909 in Förderung. Zur Betriebsanlage gehörte eine Mühle, eine normalspurige Verbindungsbahn zwischen Volkenroda und Poethen. Ab 1921 Interessengemeinschaft mit der AG Krügershall (Burbach-Konzern). Volkerode wurde bekannt, als 1930 bei der weiteren Expansion Erdöl aus der Grube zu Tage trat. Erstmals kam es in einer Kaligrube zur Erdölförderung.
