Hermann Graf zu Solms-Laubach (geb. 1842) war Botaniker und wurde 1872 außerordentlicher Professor in Straßburg, ordentlicher Professor erst 1879 in Göttingen und dann wieder 1888 in Straßburg. Er entstammte dem Adelsgeschlecht Solms, das seit 1226 den Grafen-Titel führt. Nach schweren Behauptungskämpfen gegen die Landgrafschaft Hessen im 14. Jh. konsolidierte sich die Grafschaft Solms durch die Falkensteiner Erbschaft in der Wetterau (1418), spaltete sich aber darauf in die Hauptlinien Solms-Lich und Solms-Braunfels, die sich weiter verzweigten, u.a. in Solms-Laubach.
