Die südlichste Stadtgrenze ist gleichzeitig Staatsgrenze zu Frankreich. Kern der Stadt ist Alt-Saarbrücken, welches sich an der 999 erwähnten Burg Saarbrücken angliederte und im 13. Jahrhundert städtischen Charakter erhielt. Die Industrialisierung des Saarkohlebeckens (1852 Anschluss an die Eisenbahn, 1866 Bau des Saar-Kohlen-Kanals) führte im 19.
