Bereits in den 1930er Jahren als Hersteller von kleinvolumigen Zweitakt-Einbaumotoren für den Zweiradantrieb (Mopeds und Motorräder) und für stationäre Zwecke bekannt. Daneben machte man sich einen Namen als Zulieferbetrieb für die Automobilindustrie (Kupplungen, Saxomat-Getriebe, Stoßdämpfer, Drehmomentwandler u.v.m.). Bekannt sind auch die Fichtel & Sachs Fahrrad-Gangschaltungen, insbesondere die von Ernst Sachs entwickelte Torpedo-Nabe.
