Gegenstand des Unternehmens war die "Unterstützung und Beherbergung alterschwacher, gebrechlicher Personen", heute würde man sagen: Betrieb eines Altersheims. Der Name geht zurück auf den 1729 heiliggesprochenen Vincenz von Paul (1576-1660), der sich der Findelkinder und Galeerensklaven annahm. Zu seinen Ehren wurde 1833 in Paris zur Unterstützung und sittlichen Besserung der Armen der Vincenzverein gegründet, der bald auch anderswo Nachahmer fand. Allerdings hatte das soziale Mitgefühl der Aktionäre Grenzen: 3 % Dividende durften es in den meisten Jahren doch sein.
